SMOKING CESSATION

I never knew my granddad Ellis. He died of smoking induced emphysema before he was sixty, following twenty years of ill health. My father died of smoking induced chronic heart failure, granted at seventy-one, but he had been in poor health since his forties. His last few years consisted of him lying on a bed downstairs gasping on his oxygen cylinder every half an hour or so, not a pretty sight for my mother, myself and my sister or his grandchildren. I had given up smoking every New Year and at other times since my mid twenties, but had only lasted a few days at most; often only a few hours. Why? Because I was convinced that I was addicted to nicotine. Everything pointed to that. For years doctors had told me I was, the government had told me I was and the tobacco companies told me I was. So I kept on with my addiction, at least fifty cigarettes a day, whether I wanted one or not. I was hooked!

Then, quite a few years ago, I decided that I had to do something about this. My passion is walking in the countryside winter, spring, summer or autumn, Come rain or shine, I like to take my dog out and cover three to four miles a day. Within two miles of my house are plenty of beautiful walks, mainly on the flat, but with a steep hill or two.

I was finding that I couldn’t get up the hills in one go; I had to stop three quarters of the way up and have a breather, standing there puffing and panting. This was not good as I was only in my early forties and I was beginning to turn out like my father. But what could I do, I was addicted to nicotine; everybody told me so.

Then someone showed me an article from New Scientist volume 136 issue1843 – 31 October 1992. It made interesting reading

‘Hypnosis is the most effective way of giving up smoking, according to the largest ever scientific comparison of ways of breaking the habit. Willpower, it turns out, counts for very little’

‘Combination techniques, combining, for example, exercise and breathing therapy came second with a success rate of 29 per cent. Smoke aversion, in which smokers have their own warm, stale cigarette smoke blown back into their faces, achieved a 25 per cent success rate, followed by acupuncture at 24 per cent.’

‘The least successful method turned out to be advice from GPs, which appears to convince virtually no one to give up. Self-help, in the form of books or mail-order advice, achieved modest success – around 9 per cent, while nicotine gum was little better at 10 per cent.’


This set me thinking. If I could find myself a good hypnotherapist then maybe my problem would be solved. So I looked around through Yellow Pages, there was not much Internet access in those far off days, and made many phone calls requesting brochures. Then I phoned Rob (Kelly), and something about his tone of voice impressed me. This man really knew what he was talking about. The brochure duly arrived and I phoned to make an appointment. We got talking on the phone about things and I just happened to mention that, due to a recurring problem with UV rays and my skin (I was a landscape contractor at the time), I was looking for a change of career and his job sounded very interesting. Rob then suggested that, as a smoking cessation course was coming up soon, why didn’t I book in for it, meet some like-minded people and see how hypnosis helped and come away a non-smoker.

The rest for me is history. I went on the course, duly stopped smoking my fifty cigarettes a day and quickly retrained as a hypno-analyst.

Rob explained that the two main reasons why a smoker is unable to stop are:-

  1. They believe that it would be very, very difficult to stop, and stopping would cause them great hardship and personal sacrifice.

  2. They have no (or very little) tangible incentive to stop.

Let’s examine a smokers belief system for a moment. As I said about myself earlier, smokers are convinced that they are addicted to nicotine. Everything points to that. For years doctors have told them they are, the government have told them they and the tobacco companies have told them they are. So they keep on with their ‘addiction’ because they know it is very difficult to give up.
It’s the same with the tangible incentive to quit. Smokers will have a whole list of good reasons to stop, but a good reason to stop is not a tangible incentive. A good reason is the same as a nice thought.

It would be nice not to smell of cigarettes.   
It would be nice not to cough in the morning,
It would be nice not to puff and pant walking uphill.
It would be nice to think I won’t get emphysema,
It would be nice to think I won’t die of lung cancer.


But all the nice thoughts above are just that: nice thoughts. They are not tangible benefits.
So to get you, a smoker, to stop smoking easily, I have to:

  1. Change your belief system about cigarettes and why you smoke.

  2. Find you an incentive that does mean something tangible to you and give it to you now-using suggestion therapy.
